The Michael Tynan Memorial Challenge, of which the Illawarra Mercury is a proud partner, starts with a drive and scooter which will finish with a race day fundraiser at the Kembla Grange Racecourse.
This is just the first event in a series of events for the Challenge.
The funds raised from the challenge will go towards local medical research conducted by the St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation and the University of Wollongong.
Today's events will start with a launch of the event in Sutherland before the cars and scooters head south towards Kembla Grange.
There will also be a special Tynan Challenge Paddle event on October 11 as well as the main fundraiser, a walk from Wollongong to Sydney on November 2.
The Challenge supports research happening in our university and as part of our relationship we will be taking some lucky readers on a special tour of the new facility under construction at UOW next week.
The Molecular Horizons facility being built at the UOW will, in the UOW's words, "not only broaden horizons for research into the world's biggest health challenges - it will also provide a clear view to the horizon for atmospheric chemistry researchers to monitor the Earth's atmosphere and air quality more accurately".
The five-storey building is being built with world-leading technology to properly house the world's most powerful transmission electron microscope at the facility.
It will be an epicentre for national and international researchers.
As part of our relationship with the Tynan Challenge we'll be giving some lucky readers an exclusive tour of the facility next week.
We'll bring readers across both print and digital some images and an update on how that facility is progressing from that tour. Stay tuned next week
