September is shaping up to be a very busy month with four barbecues including the Second Hand Saturday at the end of the month which should be great fun. Luckily for us, many of our members who spent July and August on holiday will be back as it will be all hands to the pump. At our last meeting we had two PhD graduates talking about the balance that we must seek between the benefits and drawbacks of the internet for youth of today. We all found their presentation very fascinating and it was very successful.
September is also Childhood Cancer awareness Month, so at various locations we will be collecting donations towards the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation which provides fund for research and development of cures. Dont forget the Hot Rod Show on Sunday, September 8, at Black Beach. It is the first of the car shows of which there will be a number during the year - but this one is the best!
KIAMA ROTARY CLUB
For some time now the Rotary Clubs of Gerringong and Kiama have worked together on community projects; the latest recipient of our joint support is the Parkinsons NSW Kiama Support Group. In the last few weeks, we have sponsored exercise classes designed by exercise physiologists at Solutions4Wellbeing, specifically for people living with Parkinsons.
But the real thrill for us has been the Parkinsons Unity Walk, a fundraising event conducted last Sunday, starting at Black Beach rock pool then following the foreshore to Blowhole Point rock pool and back again. If you ever wanted to see a motivated group of people making every effort to help themselves, then you need look no further than the members of the Parkinsons NSW Kiama Support Group.
The truth is, exercise is critical for anyone living with Parkinsons as it slows the advance of the disease and contributes to their general well-being. But that doesnt make it easy for any of them to complete a task like walking, pool to pool, even with the support of family and friends.
It was Rotarys pleasure to be able to help by conducting a sausage sizzle that was free to anyone registered to walk and by the end of the walk, healthy appetites abounded. Our support for this organisation is ongoing, and if youd like to help, then you could buy a ticket in our New Car raffle, see our facebook page for more details. https://www.facebook.com/pg/RotaryKiama/events/ You can also buy over the phone by simply calling Bob on M:0432 370 969.
