I tripped across a study that showed patients who were experiencing elevated levels of pain could manage their pain by listening to "jokes"; giving proof to the adage that "laughter is the best medicine". The article went on to make the point that "music" has similar pain-reducing characteristics.
No matter whether you're young or old, healthy or sick, happy or sad, music can improve the quality of your life in numerous ways. It reduces stress and anxiety, lifts your mood, boosts your health, helps you sleep, takes away your pain, and even makes you smarter. Listening is good; playing is better.
One size does not fit all; you need to select your music for the occasion and the listener. Highly energetic and rousing music won't cure your insomnia, but it will help you run the four-minute mile.
If you want to view the power of music, visit Netflix or Amazon and locate the documentary "Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory". If you want to enjoy an afternoon of choral excellence and travel within your own musical experience, join us at the Rotary Club of Kiama's Festival of Choirs.
KIAMA LIONS CLUB
At last week's dinner meeting, we had a spoof wine tasting at which six regular red wine drinkers tested their taste buds on a small selection of reds varying from clean skins to a $30 bottle. The results were very interesting and amusing.
As it was National Carers week, our cottage in Shoalhaven Street became the focus of attention with an open house for Carers. One such Carer who came for a break has two boys with severe Down Syndrome so she was very grateful for a break.
Our Community BBQ at the monthly Sunday market will be with the Kiama Public School P&C. The last two groups that we joined with were very pleased with our arrangement.
Our next dinner meeting will be at the Leagues Club on October 24 and will feature a lady called Rafaele Joudry who will discuss Ear and Brain vitality through Sound Therapy, new ways of treating such things as tinnitus and insomnia. Because of the broad interest it will be a partners night.

Our AGM was held last week with Cheryl Pearce elected as President, Bronwyn Guy as Hon. Secretary and Maureen Baker as Hon Treasurer. All other positions were filled and we are looking forward to 2020 with exciting new projects. Many thanks to Mia Dufty from Jamberoo CWA who presided over the election and presented President Cheryl Pearce with her 20 year badge.
Our next meeting is on November 19 at the CWA hall, 70 Shoalhaven St., Kiama at 1pm for a 1.30pm start where we will be discussing Christmas ideas. A reminder that Mahin's handicraft morning is on Tuesday November 5 from 10am to 11.30am. New members and visitors are most welcome to our meetings and all other activities.
