However a Transport for NSW spokeswoman said safety measures are in place on the pass and there had been no recent incidents of banned vehicles using the route.

Transport for NSW has launched an online map to gain feedback on traffic issues in Thirroul and Bulli.

A number of respondents focused on the issue of trucks using Bulli Pass, suggesting they should no longer be able to use the route.

"Trucks need to be banned from Bulli Pass," said a resident named Joanne.

"They are too heavy for a road that is only just hanging onto the cliff face."

Jan expressed similar sentiments, calling for trucks to be removed from the pass until a major upgrade was completed.

"Large trucks and B-doubles should be banned from Bulli Pass until Memorial Drive is extended to the elbow (if ever)," she wrote.

"They can use Mount Ousley which is safer and has more lanes, so does not cause a large traffic bank back."

Stephen said removing trucks from the pass - as well as resolving the parking situation at Bulli - would improve the traffic flow and negate the need for the extension of Memorial Drive to Bulli Pass.

The Transport for NSW spokeswoman said some trucks were banned from Bulli Pass.

The largest trucks allowed on the pass are those less than 20 metres long, weighing under 50.5 tonnes and falling under the Performance Based Standards scheme that includes trucks with increased safety standards.

"Bulli Pass is made accessible to heavy vehicles as it is a main arterial road to the northern Illawarra suburbs," the spokeswoman said.

"A $674 fine would be given out to those flouting the rules but there have been no known detection of off-route offences on Bulli Pass in recent years."

The spokeswoman said a number of heavy vehicle safety measures had already been installed, including multiple warning signs for trucks and buses to use low gear, hairpin advisory signs, one safety ramp with advisory signs and median concrete barriers to help prevent head-on crashes.
