The answer at its most basic level is quite simple, to lose weight you need to be in a calorie deficit where you burn more calories per day than what you ingest.
To speed up this process we can either perform resistance or cardio training. Both styles of training are beneficial for losing weight.
They work hand in hand together, hence neither is better than the other.
Cardio training generally burns more calories during the session and keeps us fit, whilst resistance training creates more lean muscle mass which essentially burns more calories in everyday life.
