Mixed day of results for Perez in Burnie

The 24-year-old crashed out in the opening round of the Burnie International, falling 6-4, 6-3 to fellow Australian Abbie Myers.

The loss follows Perez's short-lived stint at the Australian Open - the WTA's 249^th ranked women's singles players lost in the qualifying stage in straight sets against Yanina Wickmayer.

Myers, who is the 325^th ranked player, breezed past Perez in under 70 minutes.

It was neck-and-neck early before Myers skipped out to a 5-1 advantage. Perez won the next two games before her 25-year-old opponent closed out the first set.

The second set began in similar fashion as both players held their serve. Myers edged ahead by 3-2. They both held serve, before Perez broke Myers' serve to get the score back to 4-4.

That's where Perez's fightback ended, with Myers winning the last two games to take the match.

Earlier this week, Perez told the Mercury that she was "training hard on my singles".

"I'm trying to improve my shot selection and get a little bit more consistent," she said. "I haven't had a lot of singles matches recently where I've been able to progress through the draw and get a bit of confidence and rhythm."

However, Perez bounced back in first round of the women's doubles on Wednesday afternoon. Perez and partner Storm Sanders secured a 6-3, 6-2 win against Kyoka Okamura and Kamilla Rakhimova.

Perez and Sanders wrapped up their victory in just under an hour.
