A motorcade of teachers cruised the streets of Austinmer as their students, wearing uniform shirts, came out of seclusion to express their gratitude for the efforts delivering lessons online.
It was just one of many events Illawarra school communities have held, from Easter parades to comic videos, to motorcades like this one, to keep the student-teacher connection lively.
Austinmer mum Chan Bobbert said her children pulled out the stops to make the teachers smile.
"Finn and Keoki were very excited by the teacher motorcade because they miss the teachers (but not school)," she said.
"They put all their favourite toys out and drew rainbows so all the teachers would see it on their drive-by. The kids loved it."
"There was a lot of smiling and honking of horns and Easter decorations in the car windows. Some teachers had their class names on the windows so kids could easily spot their teacher.
Austinmer P&C president Vanessa Avery, herself a teacher, said her children were thrilled.
"The convoy filled the kids (and parents) with joy and hope," she said.
My six-year-old was mesmerised and close to tears. Thanks Austi staff, you rock!"
"Teachers are doing what they can to help the students feel as settled as they can whilst they are working tirelessly coming to grips with technology and the current situation."
