The driver managed to pull over on Gladstone Avenue and jump from the truck as the engine compartment caught alight after 8am.
Two NSW Fire and Rescue trucks arrived within minutes to find the cabin fully engulfed.
Crews quickly extinguished the blaze, preventing the fire from reaching the fuel systems, and set up traffic control on the busy road.
Jason Lovstad was driving northbound on Gladstone Avenue when he spotted the smoke and went looking for the source.
"We saw smoke and concrete dust coming over and turned around and saw the truck on fire across from Coniston train station," he said.
