While some petrol stations have put up the prices 10-15 cents in the last two days to almost $1.20, there are still plenty of places where you can fill up at 2002 prices.
A number of stations on Friday at noon were charging around 95 cents a litre, with the lowest price in the city being at Berkeley - just 87.9 cents a litre.
The NRMA's Bridget Ahern said that Sydney prices may be about to rise, she expected Wollongong to avoid any large-scale increases.
"These prices are around to stay, certainly for the short term," Ms Ahern said.
"In the coming weeks, and probably the coming months, we're likely safe from too many rises. The message is fill up whenever - if you see really cheap prices and you need a bit of petrol, it's worth filling up."
Ms Ahern said there was some volatility in prices but the key driver was the effect of COVID-19 worldwide.
"COVID-19 hit and the whole world stopped," she said.
"Not only was there too much oil in the market, there was no one using the oil. There were no planes in the sky and less people on the roads globally.
"The whole world is going to have to see restrictions lifted for [prices] to go back to exactly the way they were pre-coronavirus."
