The plan was recently endorsed by Reconciliation Australia and as an employer of three proud Indigenous ladies Mark Sleigh said it was important for Destination Wollongong and its team to acknowledge their heritage and the role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have played in creating the country we are so proud to call our home.
Mr Sleigh said Uncle Richard Davis mentored and guided Destination Wollongong through this project and is encouraging it deliver on the commitments made in the Destination Wollongong Reconciliation Action Plan document.
Present circumstances surrounding COVID-19 mean it is not possible at this time to host a partner function to share the but Destination Wollongong is still keen to share it with members and friends during National Reconciliation Week.
Mr Sleigh said genuine Indigenous product is still the most requested by the international market but sadly, little exists at present.
But it was great to see Mark Olive open his Dandy's café on Wodi Wodi in Dandaloo last month.
Mr Sleigh said the theme of National Reconciliation Week was "In This Together" and as we struggle through the challenges of COVID-19, there is no better time to reach out to our local indigenous community, acknowledge the critical role they play and have played and include them in the story we are proud to tell visitors.
To show support for National Reconciliation Week businesses, organisations and the community were encourage post on their social media channels a message about what National Reconciliation Week means to them using the hashtag, #InThisTogether2020.
Destination Wollongong has also created a page for National Reconciliation Week on its website that features messages from local business leaders and Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery on what National Reconciliation Week means to them.
