Waratah League's return to Illawarra one step closer

The wheels in motions for Basketball NSW to resume their competitions, including the Waratah League, after releasing framework last week on the pathway to community basketball returning .

The Mercury understands an official announcement on the Waratah League getting under way will be made early next week. It appears likely the season will begin at the back end of the year.

Basketball NSW chief executive officer Maria Nordstrom said BNSW would continue to undertake internal assessments and get feedback from their associations about when play should resume.

"Basketball NSW are in talks with the various associations in both country and metropolitan NSW as to what a format of the league and BNSW programs would look like for the back end of the year, government permitting for that to occur," she said.

"The government has not provided us with any guidance or framework in NSW. A lot of other states have received theirs but we haven't. That's been a challenge because we don't have a road map for planning.

"It's been an interesting time that we've never really lived through. I've gone through some challenging times in various sectors that I've worked, but the biggest challenge is for us is there's no real timeline.

"You're in that critical phase on locking down, making sure everyone knows what's going on so communication is very clear.... we are really focusing on what we need to do next."
