Wild winds were lashing the region on Wednesday afternoon and were expected to get more ferocious overnight, however will ease slightly moving into Thursday afternoon and Friday.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe damaging wind and gale force marine weather warnings for the region on Wednesday.
Wind speeds of 60km/h to 70km/h, with gusts of up to 90km/h were being felt in some parts of the Illawarra.
Friday will bring a cold snap with a wind chill making the region feel like five degrees, which is nine degrees less than the maximum forecast temperature for Wollongong.
BOM meteorologist Jake Phillips said the coldest day would be Saturday due to a series of cold fronts expected on Friday and Saturday,
"There is a slight chance of snow falling on Friday night or early Saturday morning in the Illawarra," he said. "It is not likely, but not impossible.
"Goulburn, Bowral and Southern Tablelands have a better chance of seeing a little snow.
"The next few days until Sunday, will stay quite windy.
"It will be a cold, windy and pretty awful weekend."
Mr Phillips said Bowral, which has a maximum temperature of seven degrees forecast for Saturday could feel like below zero.
With the wind continuing overnight on Wednesday, residents were asked to follow the advice of SES and move cars away from trees and secure loose items around the house, as well as stay out of the ocean.
The advice came as the roof was blown off a block of units in Merimbula when wild weather tore through the town.
Strong winds, heavy hail and a downpour of rain that left as quickly as it arrived caught Merimbula by surprise on Wednesday afternoon.
