Shortly after 8:30am, Fire and Rescue NSW crews from Wollongong Fire Station were called to reports of a roof sheet that was threatening to come off.
On arrival at the Meni cafe, firefighters found a damaged roof and requested the attendance of a Ladder Platform fire engine (cherry picker).
Crews have worked for hours to secure the roof and make it safe.
Wollongong police assisted in the closure of Crown Street to allow crews to work.
The road was expected to be reopened at 12pm.
