The Prime Minister has agreed to be a Parliamentary Patron for the 26km coastal walk through the Royal National Park to support work being done at the University of Wollongong and the St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation.
The 2020 challenge from Otford to Bundeena will take place on October 24. Numbers are limited because of COVID-19 but this year people can also register to do a virtual challenge where they walk, run, ride or swim at their own pace to reach a personal goal of 30km during October.
Tynan Motors Group director Madeline Tynan said there will also be a Drive and Scooter Challenge on October 17 that will also help fire affected communities.
Mrs Tynan said drivers will be provided with a Jeep Empty Esky to fill with local produce and products to support businesses affected by the bushfires earlier this year.
The Michael Tynan Challenge was named in memory of Mrs Tynan's father who in addition to being a motor vehicle industry leader and Sutherland Shire president, was a tireless supporter of charity. He died in 2016 after a two-year battle with cancer. The annual fundraising walk was established to continue Michael Tynan's legacy.
The Michael Tynan Challenge is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when communities come together
- Prime Minister Scott Morrison
During the last four years the Michael Tynan Challenge has raised more than $1million to directly support ongoing medical research.
In 2019 the University of Wollongong received $30,000 from the event for the molecular life sciences facility Molecular Horizons and scholarship established to fund a new collaborative antimicrobial/microbiology research project.
At the time Mrs Tynan said "we are delighted to support the development taking place in the medical research facilities at UOW".
Prime Minister Morrison said he was happy to lend his personal support for an event that raised money for medical research, and encouraged people in the Illawarra and Sydney to join in by registering to participate or make a donation.
"The Michael Tynan Challenge is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when communities come together," he said.
"And it's a great tribute to Michael who was himself a generous philanthropist that it raises funds that directly make a difference in achieving better health outcomes for our local hospitals and communities."
"Medical research at the St George & Sutherland Hospitals and at the University of Wollongong has the potential to have a lasting and positive impact on our families, our communities and our country".
