Richards had identified fast starts as Power's weakest area, but boy did they turn that around on Saturday.
The Power booted seven goals to one against Northern Districts to effectively put the game beyond doubt by quarter time at Bonaira Oval.
The home team kicked two more goals in the second quarter, but booted 10 after half time on their way to a 19.17 (131) to 5.3 (33) win.
It was an emphatic result against a Tigers side which was full of confidence after toppling 2019 Men's Premier Division champions Wollongong Lions last week.
Richards said he was delighted with Saturday's win.
"Our weakest point when we got beaten by the Lions and Figtree [earlier this year] was our first quarter," he said.
"The Lions had obviously five in the first quarter and we tried to chase them down, whereas on Saturday we did well from the start and we wanted to see how Norths did under pressure. So it was a pretty good result.
"We stuck to our plans and the first quarter was probably the best quarter I've seen us play in a number of seasons. And to do it under the amount of pressure we thought was going to be coming was exceptional by our boys."
Richards had also challenged Ben Williams to lift his intensity ahead of Saturday's game and the forward responded against the Tigers, kicking seven goals.
"He's that type of player, he can either light it up or not," the coach said. "I put a bit of pressure on him during the week. He's a Tunbridge Medal winner from 2017 so he should play good footy."
While pleased with the win, Richards knows the next fortnight will be crucial for his side's fortunes. Kiama play Figtree next week before facing the Wollongong Lions.
"We need to bring the same pressure in the next two weeks," he said.
"But it's good to know and [have] the belief in our boys that we can play like that and hopefully get some bigger scalps to come."
The other two Men's Premier Division games proved to be mismatches on Saturday afternoon.
The Kangaroos proved far too strong for Shellharbour, recording a 24.18 (162) to 1.4 (10) victory at Myimbarr Oval while the Bulldogs clinched a 14.21 (105) to 6.7 (43) victory over Bomaderry at Nowra Showground.
