The veteran couldn't wait to hug his two sons and teammates, Kyle and Leroy, after Figtree had claimed their first ever AFL South Coast Men's Premier Division title. The Kangaroos proved too strong for the Bulldogs, winning by 19.15 (129) to 3.7 (25) at North Dalton Park.
The whole moment felt surreal for Peter.
It was another chapter in his long footy journey. Earlier in the season, Peter brought up his 400th senior game of club competition Australian rules football. His career has included two stints with Figtree, as well as representing the Wollongong Lions and Campbelltown.
But for Peter, celebrating a premiership win with Kyle and Leroy is something he will never forget.
"I don't know what to say, really. The two boys, from the very beginning, helped set up the first goal, second goal and it just went on and on," Peter Veerhuis said.
"The whole team played so well, all of the guns stood up for us. It was just our day."
The two Veerhuis brothers played key roles through the midfield on Saturday. In fact, it was great teamwork between Kyle and Leroy which helped set Figtree's first goal.
Ruckman Leroy tapped the ball down to Kyle, who drove the ball deep into attack. From a pack situation, the ball fell into the hands of Kyle McFadden who kicked truly.
Less than 90 seconds later, McFadden had his second goal - again thanks to the hard work of the Veerhuis boys. From there, the Kangaroos were never headed.
Kyle Veerhuis said it was great to celebrate the occasion with his father and brother.
"It's the first year I've played with my dad and I've been able to share a premiership with him," he said. "It's just outstanding, it feels so good."
