But that is no longer the case thanks largely to the school's award-winning Student News Team.
The 10-member team of year 7 and 8 students, have created an informative and entertaining student newsletter which impressed more than just fellow students and school staff.
Lake Illawarra was judged the winner of the Lower Secondary Finalists awards in Front Page 2020.
Front Page is an initiative of Nine and Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM). It provides Australian schools and classes with the opportunity to create and submit a short school newspaper.
Lake Illawarra High School teacher Shannon McLoughlin praised the students for creating an amazing newsletter.
"It is full of great stories, QR codes and clickable links. It really is amazing," Ms McLoughlin said.
"It has just been a fantastic experience and the Student News Team will be doing even more next year. We are going to have a bigger and better newsletter that will be even more pages than the current issue."
Tori Henderson, one of two Student News Team captains enjoyed the challenge of creating and designing a quality newsletter.
"It was great to work with my friends on this project which brought our school community and school such success," the 13-year-old said.
Fellow team captain, Chae Conte enjoyed the opportunity to interview people and learn some tricks of the journalism trade.
