This photo taken by Illawarra Mercury photographer Sylvia Liber on Monday afternoon reveals how it will be difficult to see a rare occurrence in the night sky when the two largest planets in the solar system, Jupiter and Saturn, appear to merge as one large star.
The rare event is called a conjunction of two planets will be the closest they have been to one another since Galileo's time in the 17th century.
The best time to view the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn is just after sunset, weather permitting.
The Bureau of Meteorology says there is a very high 95 per cent chance of rain on Monday night with 15 to 25 km/h northeasterly winds increasing to 25 to 30 km/h.
A strong wind warning has been issued for the Illawarra coast.
