When contacted by the Mercury on Monday, Kiama Mayor Mark Honey declined to comment, other than to say general manager Kerry McMurray "is on leave".
This follows an extraordinary meeting of the council on December 10, closed to the public and media.
The agenda item was listed as a "confidential staff matter".
A few days after the meeting, Kiama council issued a brief statement through a public relations company, after the Mercury posed questions surrounding the meeting, including whether Mr McMurray had been dismissed from his role.
The statement at the time said that the "general manager is currently on leave and remains in his position as of today".
No further information was provided at the time.
The council is next scheduled to meet on February 9.
Mr McMurray was named the new general manager of Kiama council, replacing Michael Forsyth in early 2018.
