The prospect of turning Cliff Road into a one-way street so as to add a bike lane has not gone down well with many Illawarra residents.

At Monday's Wollongong City Council meeting Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery will move a motion calling on council staff to investigate the possibility of moving cyclists from the shared pathway at North Wollongong and onto a dedicated cycleway along Cliff Road.
Cr Bradbery said the reason behind his motion was because of the increasing congestion along that stretch of the shared pathway and concerns about an accident between a cyclists and pedestrian.
Judging by the comments on the Mercury's Facebook page, the idea doesn't have many supporters.
"Are you insane Wollongong City Council?" asked Teena Saffioti.
Debra Prasad felt it was "the dumbest thing" council had ever come up with, with others comparing the idea to the controversial "palm tree up a pole" in Wollongong Mall.
"Funnelling all the cars through nearby streets just to make cyclists happy won't go down well," wrote Alice Scott.
"There are already cycle ways all over the Illawarra, but the lycra-wearing population rarely use them."
Others suggested using half the shared pathway for pedestrians and the other for cyclists - even though it is already divided by direction but few people pay attention to that.
And of course there was the tired argument that cyclists should pay registration if they're using the road.
However, there was some support for the Lord Mayor's idea, with Rachael Lihou a fan of the one-way option.
"It will actually help having less cars along there for residents," she wrote.
"Weekends are a nightmare trying to get in and out of there with all the cars coming to the beach area."
Keagan Davis was also a fan of the idea, suggesting that there may be more parking spaces and the traffic along Cliff Road was already slow so making it one-way "would flow a bit nicer".
