The local federal politician and passionate Illawarra Hawks member said tonight's game at the WIN Entertainment Centre was a perfect opportunity to come together and celebrate the return of the Illawarra name to the club.
"After a year of COVID, we've had a victory on our name and a now what we want to see is a victory over United," Mr Jones said. "There has not been many events where the Illawarra has been able to get out as a community and celebrate our great town, so this is a great opportunity."
Mr Jones was one of the strongest and most vocal voices speaking out in opposition against the removal of the Illawarra name by the NBL last year.
"I'm delighted they've heard the voice of the community and now we can get behind our local team," he said.
"The best thing the Illawarra can do to keep the Illawarra in the name is to come and see a game to support the club. The team has had a great start to the year and there's nothing like a hometown crowd to bring the team home in the fourth (quarter)."
Tickets are still available to the clash at the WIN Entertainment Centre and can be purchased via hawks.com.au. Tip-off for the game is 7.30 pm. This will be the only game in Wollongong until March before the team travels to Melbourne to play in the NBL Cup
