While they probably haven't started the season as well as Luke Wilkshire would hope, the Wolves showed plenty of fight to claim a draw with Marconi on Friday.
It was a tough away assignment. The Stallions had won their first game of the season the previous week against Sydney United, who had been undefeated. It didn't look good at 2-0 down, but the boys dug in and showed some great resilient to get back to 2-2, which was a deserved result. It was a huge result against a very good side on the road.
Wilkshire had made some big calls and changes with his line-up ahead of the Marconi clash, including moving captain Lachie Scott to the bench. But Stefan Dimosci started and scored a goal, so that move paid off.
And young Evan Ball made his debut, which was a forced change at left back. After a little mistake which led to the Wolves conceding their first goal, Ball was really good, and it's good to see some young boys getting minutes.
This year's NSW NPL competition is very tight, but the Wolves have a game in hand. And they can now build on that draw with Marconi.
This coming week or so will be a big test for Wilkshire's men. The Wolves play Sydney United away on Sunday, and then face Sydney Olympic mid-week for a catch-up game.
These are a big couple of games which could shape how the rest of the season goes for the Wolves - it will be intriguing to see it plays out. But this team lost a lot of players last year, so it will take time to rebuild and for teammates to gel.
