The first round of Winter Track and Field conducted by IBS saw three of the state's leading female sprinters go head to head, over 60 metres and 150 metres. Preparing for school carnivals, athletes used the first round of competition for this purpose and also to judge how their preparation is going.

All-round athlete Delta Amidzovski took out the 60m just in front of Emma Matthews and Chelsea Ezeoka, all three being members of the NSW State team for the national titles.
Competing in graded sprints, the girls finished behind Thomas Noakes, Jonty Faulkner and Tim Martin in both sprints, with Delta being the first women across the line in both, but Emma Matthews finishing in 2nd spot from Chelsea but was reversed in the 150m with Chelsea just nudging Emma out for 2nd.
The grading proved popular with athletes mixing their talents against one another and having similar timed athletes to compete against. The junior athletes completed as under 8, under 10 and under 12, under 14, with all other athletes competing in A, B OR C. Andrew Rodda finished in 1st in division B 60m from Lisa Quinn, both masters athletes of the club, with Lara Check finishing in 3rd. In B division 150m Lara took the honours from Sarah De Vies and Kaitlyn Neto, whilst Andrew Rodda took out division C again from Lisa Quinn, and a return to the track, June Lowe in 3rd.
In the field, June Lowe returned to competition, with under 18, under 20, open and masters having two throws in Series one, the shot and Javelin. Throwers will again have two throws to contest in Series 3, to be held in July.
The winter track and field series is open to any athlete, any ability , with Series two to be conducted on Sunday 27th June, commencing at 10.30a.m..at the Kerryn McCann athletic centre.
The winter weather has seen many athletes remain at home rather than contest the weekly cross country program. Although numbers have been low to commence, (the Puckeys Run and Roy Johanson run last Sunday, it is hoped that more athletes will take advantage of these great courses and competition, not only for competition, but to remain fitness levels, and to be out there having a run to break the winter blues. The next cross country run will be held on the beautiful Minnamurra course with distances being 2km and 4km. on Sunday June 6, starting time being 10.a.m.
Jessica Hogg is improving with every run she has , and running for the first time on the Roy Johanson course, she looked impressive defeating newcomer, masters Sprinter Lisa Quinn, who is using cross country as a fitness base for her sprinting season later on.
Who will take out the awards on Saturday evening when IBS Conducts the 2020/2021 presentation evening at Dapto Leagues Club. To commence at 6.30pm. all athletes are considered for the major Special awards and in many cases, these awards were very hard to select, judged on performance and commitment. The divisional point scores are awarded with points scored at local club competition in the summer , with some of the divisions being separated by only two or three points.
So who will take home these honours; will it be an older athlete who wins the point score or a keen, young athlete? Who will take home the overall masters point score, judged on the divisions of masters athletes? We will see next Saturday. But the club hasn't forgotten their officials, and their great supporters with awards in these categories also.
A fun evening, also with a chance to take home Beaton Park passes, blue stars club membership passes for season 2021/2022, or you may be in with a chance to win a great voucher. These will be taken from all people who attend on Saturday evening, the club showing their appreciation to everyone who competed, supported and officiated during the season 2020/2021.
Our thanks go to the people who assisted us move back to our rooms under the grandstand. It has been a huge project to move all equipment out, and then back in after completion of renovations to the grandstand now finalised. Our members rallied around and we are now back in, and with the help and co-operation of athletics Wollongong, we may see the equipment shed a little more user friendly than in the past.
Congratulations to sprint star, Lauren Percival and javelin thrower, Alex Del Popolo who have both been named in the Target Talent Program conducted by Athletics NSW. Both athletes have had great season, Lauren winning the Australian under 18 200m title and Alex achieving a personal best throw over 60metres. As a member of this program last season also, Alex benefited greatly with additional support towards his favourite event, and we are sure that Lauren will be the same this season.
