Wollongong's La La La's music fundraiser for mixed ability skateboarder

But the double-amputee's trusty skateboard - his favourite friend for as long as he can remember - is no longer enough to get him by as his children (aged 10, eight and six) grow older.

Skater and hip hop artist Josh Dean is part of a troupe of mates fundraising to get Mr Ellis a car which will meet government specifications to be eligible for assistance with modifications.

"He's definitely a man of strength and resilience," he said. "Seeing him do something, like airs on a skateboard, and me just looking at that like I can't even do that because I had all this fear ... is really inspiring."

The group have organised a GoFundMe campaign as well as a hip hop night at Wollongong venue La La La's on Thursday June 17, with proceeds going towards a new set of wheels.

"Mum struggled and stuff growing up, and not really having much at times, it's just amazing when people want to give back and help you out," Mr Ellis said.

"I'm not one of those people to complain, but it's hard, especially being a [single] dad and going to sporting events and getting around and shopping, just all the little things.

"Out of the kindness of their hearts they wanted to improve my quality of life."

Mr Ellis had purchased a vehicle in the past but it was too old for the requirements for government assistance for modifications which can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

The lack of mobility has sent him into a spiral of depression, but Mr Ellis said he's finally in a good place again and has "nothing but love" for his buddies eager to help him out.

Music artist Salty and Anonimus Empire lead the lineup of the hip hop fundraiser , with Unomindz, Sludgeface, Funk Rat n Toffy, plus Azza D also sharing the stage. A Tony Hawk signed skate deck will also be on offer through a raffle on the night, along with open mic and a second-hand clothing sale.

When Mr Ellis's wish is finally granted, he will be most excited at the opportunity to get in the car with his kids and drive as far and wide as he wants.
