That's when the Kiama retiree felt impassioned to join her local Australian Red Cross and help raise vital funds for humanitarian aid.
She has been involved with the community charity ever since and has assisted on many projects, including helping distressed and diplaced people in evacuation centres due to floods or bushfires.
This Queen's Birthday, Mrs O'Brien is being recognised for her efforts of community service with an Order of Australia.
"Helping others gives me a feeling of satisfaction," she said. "I'm able to assist people who are not as well off as I am and that I have time to help others."
Mrs O'Brien's dedication to the Jamberoo Golf Club for the last 35 years has also been acknowledged with her award.
