An ISLHD spokeswoman said the man is a close contact of an existing case and has been in isolation during his infectious period.
It takes the total number of Illawarra cases since the start of this latest state outbreak to six, all have been linked to known cases and have been in isolation.
The latest case, according to NSW Health's interactive case map, lives in the 2530 postcode which includes the suburbs of Avondale and Brownsville.
"It is important to remember that confirmed cases of COVID-19 are notified by the person's normal place of residence and does not indicate where their infection was acquired," an ISLHD spokeswoman said.
Of the six active cases in the region, two are now being cared for in Wollongong Hospital's dedicated COVID ward.
There's been a total of 161 positive COVID cases in the health district since the start of the pandemic. More than 305,000 COVID tests have been undertaken.
