The tourism and hospitality sector is a big employer and the tourist association knows local business needs support more than ever right now. So it pulled together a list of how Wollongong residents can help at little or no cost, from the comfort of their home.
Destination Wollongong general manager Mark Sleigh said there has never been a more important time for the community to support small business.
"Last year, we saw some great campaigns such as "Holiday Here this year" and "Empty Esky" encouraging people to spend money in their local economies and that is a really important part of keeping doors open," he said..
"Unfortunately at the moment, some doors aren't open and they also need our support as they desperately look towards when they can commence trading."
Destination Wollongong's seven ways to support local businesses during NSW COVID-19 lockdown are:
- Buy a voucher or gift card for use later
- Order takeaway or delivery
- Follow, like, share or comment on their social media
- Shop online
- Write a positive review
- Sign up to their newsletter
- Refer friends and family to them
Mr Sleigh said small things like posting a review on a business's social channels or sharing memories of great experiences at venues for friends to enjoy not only puts a smile on faces but also provides people with ideas about what they can do when the world reopens.
"A thought costs nothing but can mean the world to people doing it incredibly tough at the moment," he said.
