The incident happened just before 11am just south of Clive Bissell Drive at the top of Mt Ousley.
The closure begins near the Gipps Road overpass and continues past the Picton Road turn-off and ends at the beginning of the Big Dipper.
Initially just one northbound lane was closed, before emergency crews opted to close all lanes while the tree branch is being moved.
There is a second branch 30 metres over the road that also needs to be removed.
An arborist has been called to remove it.
Northbound motorists should exit onto Memorial Drive at Gwynneville, then continue to the Princes Hwy and Bulli Pass, then rejoin the M1 Princes Motorway.
This route is not suitable for B-doubles, which are being parked.
Northbound traffic on Memorial Drive is heavy due to the detour through to the Towradgi Road intersection and also at the intersection with the Princes Highway at Bulli.
