Peter grew up as part of a large family in Thirroul. His mum and dad, who also served, built their home on Bulli Pass, where two of his sisters live.
Peter and two of his brothers, who have since passed, went on to serve in the armed forces.
His younger brother, Craig, wasn't in Vietnam, so it was a surprise to Peter in 1996 when the memorial wall was unveiled with 'C Riches' listed on the plaque.
"It was very disappointing," he said.
"My great-grandkids ask why Uncle Craig' name is on there and not mine.
"Craig is very understanding, and he's tried to get it changed, but no-one cared."
Peter said after 30 years in the army he still sleeps poorly, and the incorrect dedication is one of the things he's prone to think about in the early hours of the morning, especially ahead of ANZAC Day.
But after decades of frustration, there's hope the plaque will be corrected.
In 2013, the Thirroul RSL sub-branch was amalgamated with the Austinmer RSL sub-branch.
Vice-president Will Lee said the new executive were not aware of the legacy issue.
"Now we have heard from Peter we are working with him to rectify the issue," he said.
