Just to emphasise this change of seasons, snow is about to fall on the Alps and also on the Tasmanian highlands.
For much of New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, South Australia and Tasmania, Friday and Saturday will be the coldest it has been since last spring, Brett Dutschke, senior meteorologist at Weatherzone says.
Many areas will struggle to warm past the mid teens, as much as 10 degrees below average.
Melbourne and Hobart can expect windy, showery weather and possibly hail, Mr Dutschke says.
Much of each day will be colder than 15 degrees and the wind chill will make it feel even colder.
For Sydney, brisk, dry westerly winds will produce bright blue skies but add some some chill, particularly in the mornings.
Canberra should stay dry despite some cloud with temperatures and wind chill similar to Melbourne.
Adelaide will struggle to reach 20 degrees among brief light showers.
Warm and humid air is being replaced by colder and drier winds, which will last into next week. These winds will be cold and strong enough to make the next few days feel more like winter.
While South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria are already experiencing a change, a much stronger, colder change will affect a large part of south-eastern Australia from Friday. Temperatures should plummet by as much as 10 degrees.
This will come as quite a shock to some, including those who have forgotten where they stored their winter clothes.
From Sunday the cold front will have crossed the Tasman Sea, allowing wind to ease and skies to clear in most of south-eastern Australia. This will lead to cool mornings and sunny, mild days.
During next week, it will gradually warm up as winds tend northerly again, but it should not get as warm or as humid as it did this week.
Time has all but run out for an extended warm and humid spell, particularly now that we have reached the equinox and days are getting shorter.
One could say the change of seasons is nigh.
