The new year starts with 48 teams chasing a spot in the quarter-finals of the South Pacific pairs, with three knockout rounds at headquarters Fairy Meadow Bowling Club today.
Defending pairs champions father and son Steve and Ben Glasson were unable to win their section but seven other visiting Sydney teams plus 14 composite teams are through to the knockout phase.
Among a host of quality matches in round one this morning should be Taren Point visitors Jason Watkins and Chris Green taking on Windang's David Tyrrell and Rick Malley.

Oak Flats' Luke Cocksedge and Matt McIntyre had one of the tightest victories of any team after winning their first two games by a single shot and having a draw in game three.
The pair take on Garry Sampson and Wes Falconer, who won all three games to take section 32.
Sixteen section winners earned a bye in the first post-sectional round and have qualified for round two (noon) today.
Among the top matches is Stan Cheetham and Russell Campbell (Composite) facing Michael Tarbutt and Brad Rossiter (Kiama).
Jamberoo's Mick Souter and Alan Pirie take on Ian Venables and Jason Drinkwater (Dapto Citizens), who lost their opening game but still won section 46, which included Warilla superstar Jeremy Henry and partner Erin Smith.
Hemi Palmer and Scott Bateup, the 2011 South Pacific pairs champions, are into the knockout round and take on Towradgi's Graham Richards and Richard Bennett for a place in the last 16.
