Time is running out for artistic seniors to show just what they can do.
Entries for Wollongong City Council’s Seniors Week art and photography competition close this Friday and entries will be on display at Wollongong City Gallery from March 6-31.
Watercolour painter Jutta Chalk is encouraging Wollongong residents aged 55 and above to enter. Ms Chalk won a commended award for Tulip Time, her debut entry last year.
The work makes the cover of the 2013 Wollongong Seniors Week program.
Chalk said she got the inspiration from Floriade in Canberra and only just ‘‘scraped in’’ with her age, turning 55 last year.
After spending 18 years in advertising as a studio manager and graphic artist, she took up watercolours in 1999.
’’I’ve been into art all my life ... At the end of January I was voted into the Australian Watercolour Institute – it’s very tough to get in.’’
Chalk said she was honoured that her painting was chosen for the Seniors Week program cover and it was fabulous that the council got seniors involved in community activities such as the art and photo contest.
The Farmborough Heights resident taught watercolour classes from her home studio and many of her students were seniors.
Chalk encouraged residents to enter, regardless of their ability.
‘‘Everybody sees art in a different way ... there’s something for everyone.’’
Entry forms for the art and photo competition are available from Wollongong libraries and community centres, Levers art supplies at 30 Flinders Street, or Wollongong Camera House.
Wollongong City Gallery program director John Monteleone will judge the art section, and Wollongong Camera House’s Ian Sackett the photo section.
