The collection, called Picture This, appears on the Shellharbour Local History blog with an appeal for information.
Tongarra Museum curator Tamara Hynd said the shots were published after the museum fraternity tried and failed to provide historic captions.
"We have stared at these photographs and can not quantifiably say where they were taken, so any help would be greatly appreciated," Ms Hynd said.
"It is fascinating to look at the people who appear to have lived here during the past 100 years and imagine what living here would have been like for them.
"It is important that we find out who these people are in the pictures, give them their names so we can discover their connection to the present."
The images include several formal portraits as well as candid shots and a couple of fishermen with their catch.
There are also homes, roads, creeks and properties too obscure to have been identified so far.
