The drawing, syndicated at the height of last month’s fire activity, showed an RFS volunteer at work with a hose, while Batman and Superman look on in admiration. ‘‘That’s a real superhero!’’ the lycra-clad pair exclaim.
The cartoon was picked up by a Blue Mountains newspaper and ended up on the NSW Emergency Coverage Facebook page.
A nephew encouraged Mr Dorin to get on the page when he saw the ‘‘likes’’ growing at a rapid pace.
‘‘It was getting 100 likes a minute – 30,000 in two days,’’ Mr Dorin said.
‘‘There were comments from all over the world – the UK, Canada.’’
Mr Dorin, who is a retained firefighter with Fire and Rescue NSW, is now auctioning the original drawing, framed, to raise money for a fire-related cause such as the Vinnies Bushfire Appeal.
He said the drawing paid homage to the selflessness of volunteer firefighters.
‘‘When you think about the volunteers they get out and do it for absolutely nothing,’’ he said.
‘‘I wanted to make sure they got the praise they deserve.’’
Mr Dorin is inviting bids for the drawing via his website, pauldorin.com, until the end of November.
