Holy Spirit College took out Pines Surfing Academy’s 10th Annual Inter-School Challenge on Tuesday in clean one-metre swell at North Wollongong.
The Bellambi-based College out-pointed a team of students from Smiths Hill High School with Kiama High School claiming both the third and fourth spots in a field of 13 teams.
A total of nine schools participated in the challenge which pits teams of six against each other in friendly competition format.
Each team consists of two students from years 10 to 12, two from years 7 to 9 and two female students with surfers competing in one-hour heats against schools from the Illawarra and South Coast.
Lachlan Fullwood of Holy Spirit and Emma Meredith of Smiths Hill claimed the male and female ‘MVP’ titles for their effort in the surf.
Based on the success of this year’s event, Pines Surfing Academy Manager Aaron Trott said they were hoping for an even bigger edition in 2014.
‘‘It all went smoothly and this year was definitely our biggest competition,’’ Trott said.
‘‘There was a lot more schools this year with them allowed to entry as many teams as they would like.
‘‘It is good because it integrates senior and junior school really well.
‘‘It brings together different people at a school who you might not really associate with usually because of the age difference.’’
Trott said Pines currently don’t have any plans to bring in a primary school version of the event and will keep their focus on another Inter-School challenge next May.
Last year’s champions The Illawarra Grammar School did not contest the titles.
