Convener Warwick Shanks, of KPMG, said the networking group chose to hold the third of its meetings at Humber because its owner, Adam Murphy, of MCT Solutions, had shown so much determination and enterprise in getting it open.
Mr Shanks told those who attended the function that the event was being held at Humber exactly one week before the middle and upper levels were due to open.
‘‘I really congratulate Adam on the sleepless nights that he has had this last week to allow us to have the event here a week before he was planning to be ready,’’ he said.
‘‘I also want to congratulate Adam on his huge effort and the perseverance he has shown in actually getting this venue to open.
‘‘Many of you are aware of the different challenges he faced in getting a licence and getting other things happening. The coffee shop downstairs has been open for a while.
‘‘But his perseverance and his use of social media and networks to get the appropriate support. I think we all agree this is a wonderful venue in the city.’’
The Wollongong Private Business Club started in July last year and is held once a quarter.
‘‘The purpose of the Private Business Club is a networking event to give private business owners the opportunity to get together,’’ Mr Shanks said.
‘‘People who share similar businesses, backgrounds and interests intermixed with people who are a little different. When we set up the club we promised three different things. One to get the chance to mix with people you might not otherwise see but have similar interests to your own.
‘‘We are also promising a different type of experience with different venues and different types of events.
‘‘The first event last July was with Glenn Cooper who is chairman of Coopers Breweries. So we got to have a beer with the guy whose name is on the label.’’
The second event was at the new food hall in Wollongong Central around the time the new West Keira Street shopping centre development opened.
GPT’s Steve Turner spoke at the event about his experiences over many years along with Lube Markovski who opened Grill’d in the new centre near Humber.
