Mr Cornish replaces Michael Cole who retired after serving as a director since 2003 and chair since 2007.
The new chairman has been a non-executive director of IMB Bank since 2010 and was deputy chairman throughout 2015. He said it was an honour to have been appointed as chairman of such a longstanding Illawarra institution that has been around for 136 years.
Mr Cornish said he would continue to work with the board, chief executive Robert Ryan and IMB staff to provide provide superior services to members. He acknowledged the major contribution of Mr Cole who he said had successfully overseen the organisation during the challenges of the global financial crisis, the implementation of the recommendations from the 2012 Capital Structure Review and the recent merger with Sutherland Credit Union.
Mr Cornish himself has previously been chairman of Hunter United Employees Credit Union. He is also chair of Snowy Hydro Ltd, a director of Forests Corp NSW, the national president of the Ai Group and deputy chancellor of the University of Wollongong.
Fellow Illawarra resident Cathy Aston was confirmed as a non-executive director of IMB Bank at the 2016 annual general meeting which means there are now more women than men on the IMB Board.
Ms Aston is presently chair of Pillar Administration and joined Gai McGrath who was also re-appointed as a director of IMB Bank after filling a casual vacancy earlier this year.
They now sit with Jan Swinhoe who was appointed in 2014 and Margaret Towers who was appointed in 2011.
