The second-year signage students under the leadership of their Head Teacher Ian Squire and teachers Peter McAulay and Michael Doherty, used the corporate signage of PCYC and the logos of the partners involved in the overall project to share the story of how the bus has been made possible, and how it is used by PCYC staff and community groups to support youth in the community.
Funding of $50,000 for the cost of the vehicle was raised by applying for grants from local federal MP Sharon Bird ($20,000 from the Stronger Communities Fund); ETC Community Support Fund ($11,000); and local Registered Clubs, all facilitated through the partnership of Rotary and PCYC.
Michael Jones, manager of Wollongong PCYC is supported by president Dot Hennessy OAM, and a very active group of young members including Senior Constables Darren Palk and Cate Johnston who form the PCYC Management Committee.
The members work tirelessly to initiate and support the very diverse range of programs currently being conducted at PCYC Wollongong.
A recent example of the team’s passion and dedication was the TIME4KIDS fund-raiser held in Crown Street Mall, Wollongong, in April, where all were involved in the preparation and overall success of the day raising almost $9000.
Since 1952 when the PCYC was first established, the club has continued to grow and develop a very strong presence. Current programs include the safer drivers course for learner drivers, the RMS approved course; training in boxing, weights, gymnastics, archery, fitness and street soccer, low cost tutoring program k-12; Blue Star citizenship and leadership.
PCYC offers a diverse range of programs.
The popular Twilight Tournaments will start again in Term 3 focusing on youth coming from school on a Friday afternoon, enjoying a shake and a healthy snack; playing a competitive sport; participating in a personal development, life-skill activity, enjoying a healthy dinner with each participant being returned to his/her home at the end of the night. Rotary is a major supporter of this event.
