Wollongong father-of-three Andrew Teao, 37, was walking through Crown Street Mall with friends about 3.30am Sunday, after a night out in the city.
According his partner, Marion Rapana, he stopped near the 7-11 convenience store to help a female who approached his group.
“She approached them and asked for a smoke, she was cold and crying,” Ms Rapana said, in a post to social media.
“Andrew gave her his jumper and he was giving her information about [a] refuge to go [to] …
“Next minute a guy randomly punched him and Andrew was knocked out.”
Wollongong police would like to speak to the man depicted in the above CCTV footage.
Contrary to earlier reports on social media, the attack is not considered a one-punch assault, according to Detective Acting Inspector Jason Joerdens, of Wollongong Local Area Command.
“It wasn’t a one-punch assault as such,” he said.
“The investigation is still ongoing. We’re trying to identify a person to speak to. He might be able to help us with our investigation.”
Police have taken a statement from Mr Teao, who was discharged from hospital later on Sunday.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Wollongong police on 4226 7899 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
