Wollongong police issued a warrant for the arrest of 52-year-old Michael Graham Gale on Friday night – more than 12 hours after Steven Edwards, 39, was wounded during an altercation on Denison Street about 6am.
Police officers found Mr Edwards, from Bulli, on the footpath outside the clinic with a stab wound to his chest and conducted CPR in an attempt to save him.
The victim was rushed to Wollongong Hospital, where he died a short time later.
In the hours following the incident, Wollongong Police District commander Acting Superintendent Chad Gillies told the media that Mr Edwards was heading to the methadone clinic when the early-morning fight erupted.
A strike force has been set up to determine what sparked the altercation, he said.
The scene was examined by forensic police and a search of the area was conducted. No knife or weapon was found, police said.
The arrest warrant, issued about 8pm on Friday described Gale as Caucasian in appearance, about 170cm to 175cm tall, with a medium build and fair blonde hair.
“Anyone who sees him, or believes they know his whereabouts, is urged not to approach him but to call Triple Zero immediately,” police said.
Anyone with information about the incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Wollongong police Detective Inspector Brad Ainsworth said all tips would be kept confidential.
