Trees, grass and shrubs have been removed from the strip adjacent to King Street.
A spokeswoman for Property NSW, the state government body responsible for the area, said land maintenance was being undertaken on the eastern side of Lake Illawarra’s Griffin Bay “to improve public safety and access to the area”.
“This maintenance work follows the recent repair of a jetty and viewing platform on the lake foreshore which have now been reopened to the public,” she said.
The work began on June 26 and is expected to take about three weeks to complete.
The developable waterfront areas along King Street, including the Kully Bay wetlands and the open space along Northcliffe Drive, have been owned by Property NSW since the Lake Illawarra Authority was scrapped in 2013.
It has previously considered developing residential, commercial or retail sites on the land.
Asked if there were any plans to build on the site, the spokeswoman said Property NSW would consult with the community and stakeholders on any future use.
“This is an important foreshore location so community feedback will inform its direction,” she said.
