A Fire and Rescue NSW crew arrived at the toilet in MacCabe Park, off Burelli Street, about 3.15pm on Tuesday.
A FRNSW spokesman said the one-crew response was prompted by reports of a fire inside the toilet building.
Crews arrived to find a rubbish bin alight inside the Wollongong City Council-owned lavatory.
Initial reports suggest something was placed in the bin, possibly a cigarette, was responsible for the fire.
Firefighters gained access to the loo, which is electronic, and the fire was promptly extinguished.
The crews left the scene about 3.30pm, the spokesman said.
The toilet is understood to have sustained minimal damage.
The incident has been reported to the council.
