Emergency services were called to Madigan Boulevarde about 9.20pm on Thursday.
Two men were pulled unconscious from the home by firefighters and police. Neighbours also went to the pair’s aid.
One man, aged 84, died at the scene after he was unable to be resuscitated.
The man’s son, aged 53, was removed by police and firefighters. He was revived at the scene before being airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment, where he is believed to be in a critical condition.
Four police officers required treatment for smoke inhalation. Three were treated at the scene.
The other, a male senior constable, was taken to Shellharbour Hospital for treatment. He has since been released.
The house was destroyed in the fire. A crime scene has been set up.
Detectives from Lake Illawarra Police District will investigate the incident.
While the cause is not known at this stage, it is not believed to be suspicious.
10pm Thursday: A person has died and another is in a serious condition as a fire burns at a home in Mount Warrigal.
Firefighters were called to a property on Madigan Boulevarde about 9.20pm Thursday.
Rescuers pulled two unconscious people from the home and attempted CPR for some time.
One of the injured has since been declared deceased; another has suffered burns to their airways and is in a serious condition.
An ambulance rescue chopper is en route the the area.
Two people – there are conflicting reports as to whether they are rescue workers – are also being transported by road ambulance to Shellharbour Hospital, suffering smoke inhalation.
The Mercury understands there are several others to be assessed by paramedics.
Fire crews from Shellharbour and Albion Park were first to arrive; others were en route.
A resident told the Mercury an elderly man and his son were inside the home.
She said her own son, Ryan, was among those suffering from smoke inhalation after he ran to the pair’s aid.
“My son come back home, got a bit of wood, smashed the window, the old man was calling to us - we couldn’t get him out,” she said.
The fire has been extinguished, as at 10pm.
Three police officers have also suffered smoke inhalation and are receiving oxygen at the site.
The road has been cordoned off; the site will be declared a crime scene.
