Featuring work from Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging students, Every Photo A Memory runs from Wednesday to Friday at the Karoona Art Gallery at TAFE NSW Wollongong West.
Featuring work from TAFE Wollongong West students, opening night is on Wednesday (November 21) from 5pm to 7pm.
One of the students who will be exhibiting work is Bryce Adam.
The 20-year-old Dapto resident will be displaying “a bit of a niche genre of photography - infrared photography”.
“(It’s where) I’m not taking photos from the visible light spectrum that we see in; it’s from the infrared spectrum that our eyes can’t see, but does exist,” he said.
After becoming interested in photography while completing his HSC, Adam has since actively pursued a passion for it.
Adam said he sought to take his work to “a fine arts standpoint”.
“I really want to take it to an art level, where people can appreciate it on not only on an aesthetic level, but they can feel something about it as well,” he said.
After completing his diploma, the aspiring photographer said he may well take a break from studying.
‘I want to try and advance my skills on my own, and if I feel like I want to do more study in photography then I’ll go back to it,” he said.
Adam said his career goal was to run his own photography business whereby he would sell the likes of prints or calendars.
Another student who will be showcasing work is Russell Vale’s Amanda Craig.
The 28-year-old previously studied journalism, graduating from the University of Wollongong in 2016.
She then decided to study photography “as another skill-set”.
From there her interest has grown, as in addition to an interest in creative writing she has embraced photography as “another outlet for story-telling”.
Craig will be displaying several photographs as part of the exhibition.
“I love the horror side of things,” she said. “That’s a passion of mine; I watch a lot of horror movies.
“So a couple of them, I took photos at a local cemetery, and my sister acted as a model for me, (as like) the spirit walking among the graves.
“Another one was a self-portrait that was part of another series I did for an assignment, where I did close-ups of porcelain dolls.
“I decided to do my make-up like Annabelle from The Conjuring series, and do a self-portrait that way.”
After finishing her diploma this year, Craig said her goals were to either land a position as a journalist, or further pursue a career in photography.
