Stanwell Park residents and visitors can are excited for the new addition to the popular foreshore area.
Wollongong City Council funded the construction of the Hamptons-style white and grey timber building with a wide verandah. Work on the project cost $1.4 million.
The keys to the cafe have been handed to the new tenant this week.
The council started work on the new beach café in July after the demolition of the aged kiosk building and residence that had occupied the site for more than 50 years. The building no longer met health and food code requirements.
The new café has an elevated covered dining deck overlooking the park, a paved outdoor seating area, a kiosk and kitchen.
Two fully accessible public toilets are also a key component of the new design that was influenced by community feedback.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said he was pleased with the welcome addition to Stanwell Park’s popular beach reserve.
“I think it looks fantastic and I’m pleased this project has been completed on schedule and on budget,” he said.
“However, perhaps even more importantly, I hope the community gets much enjoyment from this building.
“We know how much this building is loved – the community made that clear when we engaged with them about the new design.
“They told us they wanted us to keep the much-loved original kiosk sign and to make it a feature on the new building. And we did.”
Advance Catering Systems Holdings Pty Ltd won the tender to operate the business.
