A plan to upgrade a tricky North Wollongong intersection has the support of motorists.

But not everyone is in favour of traffic lights.
In June last year Roads and Maritime Services called for feedback on safety improvements to the intersection at Bourke, Keira and Virginia streets.
"Public feedback supported elements of the proposal including improved pedestrian access and mobility, improved safety for vehicles turning at the intersection, and the potential for improving traffic flow along Bourke Street," an RMS spokeswoman said.

However some nearby residents were concerned about the effect on parking in the area and access to driveways.
The possibility of traffic lights placed at the intersection, which has two staggered legs, did not please everyone.
"Requests were made to consider alternative options to traffic lights, such as a roundabout or improvements to existing pedestrian refuges," the spokeswoman said.
At this stage no funding committed to the project.
