They started as the Swifts in their earliest days and have been the Wanderers, Sweethearts, Rosebuds and the oddly named Shark Cats in the 1970s and 80s.
On Sunday the Sharks celebrate the club's 130th anniversary when they take on Fernhill at Ocean Park, hoping to prove their worth as finals contenders.
Woonona are eighth, but only three points off third-placed Corrimal Rangers halfway through the season, a huge boost for a club familiar with recent relegation scraps.
"It's a big day for us, with a lot of the old boys around," coach Dan McGoldrick said, having overseen three consecutive wins, including a 2-1 victory over perennial heavyweights Tarrawanna.
"There are people who volunteer a lot of their time for the club, so it's a day where we can recognise everyone who has contributed and hopefully we can also go out there and play well for them."
