Mercury photographer a Walkley finalist

Mercury chief photographer Kirk Gilmour has been announced as a finalist in the prestigious Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Awards.His entry Batten Down the Boogie Boards captured a moment of true commitment to Aussie beach culture, as one couple braved a summer storm at Towradgi Beach.

  • SLIDESHOW: finalists in the Daily Life/ Feature categoryGilmour was on a news assignment in January when he noticed a storm approaching over the Illawarra escarpment.As the couple's beach umbrella turned inside out, they calmly raised their boogie boards above their heads to shelter from the storm.Gilmour is one of three finalists in the Daily Life/Feature Photography section of the awards, which will be announced at a gala dinner in Sydney on November 26.Illawarra Mercury editor Stuart Howie said the nomination was a salute to the newspaper's world-class photographic team.
