Wollongong's next generation of environmental champions converged on the Botanic Garden on Monday to tackle topics like recycling, pollution and biodiversity.

The event, involving 800 schoolchildren, kicked off the council's annual Rise and Shine campaign, which encourages residents to make small changes to live more sustainably.
For Wollongong Public School's Alara Muftuoglu, the day was a chance to learn how to make a difference into the future.
"I think it's important to learn about this so that when we are older we can encourage our own families to do things like reuse and recycle and be more sustainable in our own houses," she said.
Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said involving young people would "help make Wollongong one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the world".
