The Mercury reported that McDonald's has lodged a development application for a freestanding take-away food and drink premises located at 45-49 Princes Highway.
If approved by Wollongong City Council, the franchise would open new doors about three kilometres away from the McDonalds at Figtree and a 10-minute drive away from the Dapto store.
The proposal includes a McCafe, playland, dining area, drive-thru and car park on vacant land.
The proposed hours of operation are 24 hours, 7 days a week with an average of 12 daytime and 3 nighttime staff.
Readers took to the Mercury's Facebook page to share their opinions on the proposed development.
Louise Irwin said "like we need another fat shack. I'd rather an Aldi than this trash". Hungry Jacks was also a popular alternative for the site.
While Tom Karevski could see the employment benefits, "do it, create more jobs."
Residents were excited, saying "winning", "wooo", "great news", with others worried the temptation to pick up a quick snack would be too much.
"This is dangerous. Our late night Figtree one is already to close to us as is," Hayley Wannell said.
Abby Trommestad feels like she is surrounded by fast food joints. "I'm now gonna have the option of two Maccas, Hungry Jacks, Dominos, Subway and KFC, all within three kilometres of my house".
Some people agreed a McDonald's in Unanderra was needed as Dapto and Figtree stores were busy.
Tina Marinelli said "Dapto and Figtree [are] always packed. It's needed. Went to Figtree one night [and the] line was out on the road".
However, many readers opposed the proposal such as Ralphy Walter, who said "not another Maccas - we have enough. Just promoting more bad eating habits", with Joe Louis and Jessica Reefman saying it was not needed as there were already stores close by.
